While in the capital for a few days we got a chance to experience more of the wild-life of our country as well. We took a two-hour motorized canoe ride up the main river in search of hippos. It was fascinating to see some fancy houses on the banks of the river near the capital, but then also the villages, little islands, and birds that are natural to the area. Then, eventually we reached an area where a group of hippos was lounging. I was surprised to see one out of the water, munching on shrubs on the bank, and realize just how huge this animal is. After a few minutes, he turned and slunk back in to the river, heading in our direction. We’ve heard that hippos are actually quite dangerous when they’re threatened because they can easily turnover a boat and smash it up. So, we were glad to see that the driver quickly turned away and found some other hippos mostly submerged a good distance off. While the boat ride was a little long for our kids, they did appreciate the different scenery of a major river, very different from our region that doesn’t have a real river. And they were impressed by the hippos too.
