Let’s Talk About Heat

The kids cooling off in personal laundry tub pools
It has been hot! We’re fortunate to be on the edge of the desert, but we still get scorching weather this time of year. There is a difference between feeling hot and your body reacting to no relief from the heat (i.e. heat rash). Our bodies are starting to make the adjustment to the heat, but there are still things that just don’t have solutions, like poor Smile-On is covered in heat rash which doesn't seem to be getting much better. Although it looks terrible and is itchy from time to time, otherwise it isn't much of a problem. The only time I remember our children complaining about the heat is when the electricity / fans are out. For those times we try to get some relief from scarves we made that we soak in water. The past week the power has been out for more time than it has been on, with some days not having any or only a few hours, as we’re told a neighboring country as cut in half the amount of electricity they will sell us.

I’m a numbers girl, so let’s put some numbers out there. Our house is regularly getting to 100 degrees or more these days. We saw 102 inside our house the recently. In the morning the house is 89-90 when we wake up. Outside it is probably getting to at least 110, without adding in the real feel of the sun. Once we set the thermometer in the sun and saw 120. Likely the hottest place is our unairconditioned car. We’ve seen the thermometer there at 53 degrees, which we looked up to be 127 degrees. One day this week in our dining area I thought, wow, it feels cooler right now. I looked at the thermometer and it was 100.9F It is amazing how adaptable God created our bodies!

The strangest part of all this is when touching everything it is hot. A dish, water bottle, getting in bed, walls, chairs, lotion, etc. Anything we touch feels like it’s been warmed in the oven. I feel badly for our computers and refrigerator!
