One of the highlights of our extended time in the US this year has been the sports teams that our kids have been on. In the summer our kids played baseball and softball and got a taste for what it’s like to be in a real game with real pressure and challenge. They rose to the occasions and grew a lot in confidence amid making some memorable put-outs, hitting batters, or hitting RBIs with lots of other highs and lows. In that process, A Delight grew into one of the biggest encouragers of the team, feisty and hardworking despite coming up to new situations all the time that she’d never had to deal with before.

In the fall the kids were all on a soccer team as well. And they each got a chance to score a goal too! Zig-zag was a natural talent as a goalie, and Smile On became the “final stopper” as his team’s most reliable defender (although he discovered a knack for attacking the goal later as well). A Delight again grew into the vocal heart of her team, and was the constant motor in the mid-field that was always causing the other team problems at any place on the field. Even more during the soccer season all of the kids saw the importance of team-work. How it’s necessary to be someone that your teammates can rely on to be in the place they’re depending on you to be. That’s a big thing we like to come back to, throughout all the challenges and chances for triumph, the most important part is to be there for your team and stick together. As we reflect on the importance of team, we are continually inspired that even when we’re so far from our colleagues in the Sahel, we want to “be there” for them and continue to be dependable in support of the ministry they’re a part of.
