Ants Go Marching

As the weather starts to get really warm again, we are seeing more and more bugs trying to re-establish themselves in our house. The most interesting of these is a type of ant that builds red dirt tunnels everywhere it goes, which I’m guessing turn into the large red ant hills that look a little like miniature buttes of the South West. It seems like every couple days we have to clean tunnels off of some wall or corner. Here’s a picture of a creative pattern they started on one of our walls, and a tunnel they started with no wall to support it.
Another thing that makes these ants interesting is that half their body is transparent, which gives them a weird look. We haven’t been bitten by any, so they don’t seem to ferocious, although we do have more normal mid-size black ants who will climb your leg and bite if you happen to be sitting in the wrong place near where they are scouting for food. These hurt and sting for a surprisingly long time!
