Hot 'n' Cold

Granddad walking through a field with the kids
on a hazy January day
Wow it has been cold here!  But now it’s getting hot again!  In the "Casa" language a greeting is to ask how the cold or hot is depending on the season, and the response is to say, "oh it's the time for it."  The past week or so has been one of those times when some days people will ask about the heat and other days about the cold, and the response to both can be "it's the time for it."  Now I feel more sympathy for my southern brethren, as I can see how quickly exposure to the heat throws off your sense of temperature!  For about a week in January it was downright cold in the morning when the inside temperature was in the 60s.  We were chilled even with sweatshirts on.  Besides that, we have had some weeks in Dec/Jan of lots of wind and draftiness, lots of sand in the air that keeps temps lower, but just cooler in a pleasant way for us.  Now the hot season is starting a little prematurely with less haziness in the sky.  So we have to turn the fans back on and shed our long sleeves and blankets.  Unfortunately that means the electricity, which had been pretty stable for a few months, is getting more erratic and so is running water.  Today during our language class it was 92 in the room, but with the shade drawn and fan going it only felt slightly warm, like around 78 degrees back home.  I’ve heard that your sense of temperature goes first, but by the time it gets to be 104 degrees in the room your brain just melts.  Something to look forward to I guess…
