February Marches

It doesn't take much for loitering students to get the itch
for another march!

Peaceful demonstration marches are a well-established institution here. There are frequent university student marches about student stipends or political agendas. But every year students have two special marches at this time to remember the student protesters who died in a march some 20 years ago. This week there was another special march for all citizens to show their support for the soldiers who are fighting extremists on the border, and to show unity against the extremists trying to gain credibility here. Almost all businesses shut down for the morning and then long speeches followed the march. These happened peaceful in all major cities around the country, but I sure there was also a fair amount of political jockeying by different parties trying to use this national sentiment for their individual causes too.
